About
Hanna Barakat is a Palestinian-American researcher in Human-Computer Interaction and Science & Technology Studies. She studies how emerging technologies perpetuate harm and how marginalized communities creatively leverage technology in decentralized ways. She focuses on the material impact of digital technology in communities facing restricted information, censorship, and surveillance. Her work has been featured in CSCW, ICWSM, Tech Policy Press, and Logic(s). She is starting her PhD at the University of Washington’s Human Centered Design and Engineering.
Outside of research, Hanna challenges techno-optimistic narratives by creating art for Better Images of AI and AIxDesign. She is also a competitive runner who represented Palestine in the 2020 Olympic Games.
